Smaregi Co., Ltd. and Asterisk Co., Ltd. are strengthening their collaboration to expand the use of RFID-based POS systems in physical stores, with a focus on retail and apparel businesses. The companies had previously integrated Asterisk’s RFID readers with Smaregi, a cloud-based POS system that operates on devices such as iPads. The latest move aims to take that collaboration further and support more efficient store operations.
The push comes as retailers and apparel businesses face labor shortages, higher labor costs and the challenge of managing large product volumes. Smaregi’s third medium-term management plan, announced in June 2026, identifies industry-specific POS systems and stronger labor-saving and automation solutions as key priorities. The expanded partnership is intended to address these operational challenges, particularly around checkout and accounting.
RFID can change how items are processed at the register. Instead of scanning products one by one as with conventional barcodes, RFID readers can identify multiple tagged products at once without direct contact. This can reduce scanning work for staff, ease the burden on customers using self-checkout and help shorten checkout times.

Going forward, Smaregi and Asterisk will combine Smaregi’s POS and store management capabilities with Asterisk’s RFID technology to promote wider adoption of RFID registers in physical stores. The companies will also examine applications beyond accounting, including store security, where RFID can help identify individual products.
