Starley Inc., which designs new relationships between humans and AI, has launched a new “Chat Mode” (hereinafter referred to as “this mode”) for Cotomo, a chatty AI that has been downloaded over 1 million times.
This mode offers three options: “Simple,” “Everyday Conversation,” and “Role Play.” In particular, “Role Play” mode displays stage directions in addition to traditional conversations with character-like AI, giving users a sense of realism that makes them feel as if they are immersed in the world of a story or novel. To commemorate the release of this new feature, all users who log in to “Cotomo” and register will receive an item (candy) that can be used in this mode.
Overseas, role-playing interactions with AI are already spreading, especially among young people. The major US service Character.AI has reportedly reached 20 million monthly users, with the majority of users being Generation Z, aged 18-24. A recent survey also found that approximately 70% of US teenagers have used an AI companion, suggesting that interactions with AI are evolving from a convenience to an experience where people can enjoy stories and emotions.
