ABB is expanding its partnership with Electric Torque Machines (ETM), a subsidiary of Graco Inc., to develop and commercialize motors designed for data center cooling. The technology uses ETM’s patented Transverse Flux Motor (TFM) design and is expected to be marketed under the ABB brand.
TFM motors deliver high torque at low speeds, making them suitable for large cooling fans, pumps and cooling towers. Their direct-drive architecture reduces mechanical complexity and energy conversion losses, helping simplify cooling infrastructure while lowering noise, maintenance requirements and operating costs over the equipment’s lifecycle.
This cooperation arrives at a time when the brisk pace of creation of AI infrastructure is fueling demand for computing capacity and more efficient cooling. The biggest increase in power demand in data centers is forecast for 2025 (17%), while the majority of the increase will be related to AI (50%), the said by ABB. Server densities are also on the rise.

ABB intends to market the new motors along with its variable-speed drives, and its range of high-efficiency motors, low-harmonic drives and liquid cooling equipment. This will give operators more options for matching cooling systems to their infrastructure needs.
The effort supports ABB’s work to further its mission for greater energy efficiency and reliability in industrial applications. ETM creates and licenses its TFM technology to OEMs to help them bring low-speed, direct-drive applications to market.
