Niantic Spatial and the Singapore Land Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to assess the feasibility of building Singapore’s first national-scale Visual Positioning System map.
The collaboration will bring together the Singapore Land Authority’s nationwide geospatial data and Niantic Spatial’s work in geospatial AI, computer vision and visual positioning. The authority manages high-resolution mapping resources, including aerial imagery and nationwide 3D point cloud data. The two organizations will examine how these datasets can be combined with visual positioning technology to help machines better understand their surroundings and navigate physical spaces.
The discussions will also look at how VPS performs across Singapore’s urban environment and where high-precision positioning could have practical value. Areas being considered include autonomous driving, robotics, urban planning and operations, emergency response, public safety and location-based digital experiences.

The initiative is also linked to the growing use of physical AI, where machines need to understand and interact with real-world environments. More accurate positioning could support applications involving autonomous robots, smart infrastructure and smart city systems, including future AI applications.
For Niantic Spatial and the Singapore Land Authority, the current phase will focus on evaluating the technology’s technical feasibility and potential applications before moving toward broader implementation.
