IonQ and CMC Microsystems have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand access to commercial quantum computing for Canadian researchers and small-to-medium sized enterprises.
Under the collaboration, IonQ will become a listed cloud quantum computing access provider for the FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox, giving users access to IonQ’s commercial trapped-ion quantum computing systems through the program.
The Quantum Computing Sandbox operates through FABrIC, an initiative supported by funding from the Government of Canada’s Strategic Response Fund and managed by CMC Microsystems. The program is designed to strengthen Canada’s semiconductor and quantum industries by providing engineering support alongside cloud-based quantum computing access.

For IonQ, the agreement sort of situates its quantum systems inside an initiative that s focuses on bringing real world, practical access to quantum technologies in Canada. For researchers and smaller firms, the collaboration is meant to smooth the path so they can test quantum computing without needing direct access to specialized quantum hardware, or at least not in the usual way.
This partnership arrives while governments, research institutions and businesses keep moving forward to grow the infrastructure that’s needed for quantum technology development, in general. By adding IonQ as a listed provider, the FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox broadens the computing resources available to Canadian users while supporting research and potential enterprise applications
