OpenAI has released a preview version of its ChatGPT desktop application for Linux . This means that OpenAI now has native clients for all major desktop operating systems, and is ready to offer its coding agent Codex alongside ChatGPT and the ChatGPT Work environment.
This release adds support for x86-64 and Arm64 architectures in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and Fedora 44. OpenAI distributes its clients as DEB and RPM packages. This effectively means that it will work on many major Debian-based and Red Hat-based Linux distributions, including Linux Mint, which I use.
This release comes approximately one month after Anthropic launched its Linux desktop version, “Claude.” The Anthropic client supports Ubuntu 22.04 and later, and Debian 12 and later, and is said to offer broader support for Debian-based systems.

On the other hand, distributions such as “Arch Linux” and “NixOS” have been slow to adopt the new format, leading to strong dissatisfaction from some users who were hoping to use it . There are also calls for the program to be distributed in “Flatpak” or “AppImage” format.
Nevertheless, OpenAI explains that “Linux was one of the most requested platforms for desktop applications, and this release extends ChatGPT and Codex to all major desktop operating systems.” Given this, it’s likely that support for other distributions will be added soon.
