ULVAC, Inc. is setting up a new production base in Japan for its continuous vacuum melting furnaces. These furnaces are used in the manufacturing of rare earth magnets. The timing is not random. Demand has been rising fast, and the company expects orders to reach roughly three times what they were before. A lot of that demand is coming from Europe and North America.
Rare earth magnets are now part of many industries. Electric vehicles. Wind energy. Data centers. HVAC systems. Even space related applications. At the same time, supply chains are still heavily tied to China. Because of that, companies in Western markets are trying to spread risk and bring parts of the supply chain closer to home. That shift is creating more demand for equipment that can be sourced outside China.
Up to now, ULVAC has been producing these furnaces mainly through its China operations. With the new Japan site, it will move to a two location setup. This gives more flexibility in delivery and helps reduce supply risk, while still keeping support for the Chinese market.

The new facility is planned to start in September 2026. Annual capacity is expected to reach around 12 units. ULVAC already has experience in this space, with more than 400 units delivered worldwide.
