Broadband Security Co., Ltd., Taiwanese grid-use battery manufacturer SEGL ENERGY, and Aslitera Co., Ltd. , the sole distributor of SEGL ENERGY in Japan, have decided to jointly develop a cybersecurity diagnostic business specializing in grid-use battery energy storage systems (BESS). This will be the first business in the industry in Japan to provide a specialized diagnostic menu covering PCS (power conditioners), EMS (energy management systems), BMS (battery management systems), and market trading APIs for grid-use battery storage systems. Starting in September 2026, they will sequentially begin providing security assessments, vulnerability assessments, penetration tests, security monitoring, and security evaluation reports.
Background of the announcement
As renewable energy sources become the primary power source, grid-based energy storage facilities are rapidly gaining popularity as a means of adjusting power supply and demand. However, because the PCS, EMS, and BMS components of these storage facilities are connected to networks and linked with market trading systems such as JEPX, specialized cybersecurity measures different from those for general IT equipment are required.

In Japan, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy and the IPA (Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan) published the “ERAB Cybersecurity Guidelines Ver. 3.0” in May 2025, recommending that aggregation operators develop and evaluate security measures and utilize third-party audits.
Furthermore, regarding the “JC-STAR” security requirements compliance assessment and labeling system for IoT devices, which began operation in March 2025, the system is being developed to require compliance for new equipment applying for connection contracts to high-voltage grids from April 2027 onwards. Further expansion of the scope is planned from October 2027, and since the application date for the grid access contract will be the basis for determining applicability, businesses planning new grid connections are required to take action as soon as possible.
Against the backdrop of these changes in the regulatory environment, there is a growing need among owners, asset managers, and aggregators of grid-connected energy storage facilities for specialized diagnostic and monitoring services that understand the unique system configurations of energy storage facilities, rather than general-purpose security assessments.
