JAPAN AI and CONOC have launched two AI agents designed to automate routine tasks in Japan’s construction industry. Called Genba Photo AI and Gencho AI, the tools will be available from September 1, 2026, and were developed using JAPAN AI STUDIO alongside CONOC’s construction industry expertise.
This shift is happening while the industry deals with older workers, fewer laborers, and new rules on overtime. Even with a market that is valued at 52 trillion yen, only 20.7% of construction firms say they use DX. AI use is even lower at 9.4%. The firms say AI will not work well unless the tools match how the work is actually done on site, not off the shelf software meant for everyone.
Genba Photo AI analyzes site photos, identifies the type and stage of work, reads construction blackboards and automatically creates photo logs. Users can review and revise the generated records.
Gencho AI creates draft survey sheets from audio recordings and manually entered information. It can also flag missing survey items and export completed sheets in Excel and PDF formats.

The collaboration began after JAPAN AI invested in CONOC on March 31, 2026. CONOC currently provides construction-focused cloud services to more than 777 construction companies.
Initially, the agents will be offered to a limited number of CONOC Construction Industry Cloud users. Gencho AI will first target construction, interior and renovation businesses before expanding further.
The companies also plan to connect CONOC Construction Industry Cloud with JAPAN AI STUDIO and develop additional AI agents for areas such as estimation, costing, scheduling and invoicing.
