Mercari’s crypto subsidiary, Mercoin, has launched a new “Point Investment” feature that automatically uses Mercari Points to purchase selected cryptocurrencies. Available from September 15, 2026, the feature initially supports Bitcoin and Ethereum, with additional assets expected to be added later.
Once users activate the feature, newly received Mercari Points are automatically allocated to their selected cryptocurrencies. Users can choose one asset or divide purchases equally between multiple supported assets. The feature itself does not charge a usage fee, although crypto transactions include a spread as part of the quoted price.

The change makes it easier for people to get into crypto markets by linking buying cryptocurrency with Mercaris existing points system. This might be very helpful for people who don’t know much about crypto trading. It lets them put in amounts without needing to do separate cash payments.
The new feature also shows a trend in financial technology in Japan. Of treating crypto as a separate service it is being added to everyday apps that people use. Mercoin said that 90% of its users had no experience, with crypto trading as of March 2026. This shows how important it is to make it simple for more people to get started.
