Japan has found an unusual technological response to increasingly dangerous summer temperatures: a refrigerator designed for people rather than food.
Known as the Do Hiemon Box, the device is a one-person cooling booth developed by Japanese refrigeration and vending-machine manufacturer SDRS and distributed by industrial equipment supplier Trusco Nakayama. It has attracted international attention because it looks like a large vending machine or refrigerator that a person can step inside. But the idea is less futuristic novelty than a practical response to a growing workplace and public-safety challenge.
How Does Japan’s “Human Fridge” Work?
The Do Hiemon Box is designed to cool an overheated person quickly rather than cool an entire room.
The booth maintains an internal temperature of around 15°C, while chilled air at approximately 5°C is directed toward the head, neck, shoulders and back. According to the manufacturer’s claims reported by multiple outlets, users can feel considerably cooler within about five minutes, while a session of around ten minutes is intended to help reduce heat stress. A 20-minute automatic shut-off is included to prevent excessive cooling.
The design of this thing is really about what Japan likes, which is making things small and really good at what they do. This machine is 2 metres tall it weighs around 293 kilograms and it has wheels so you can move it around to different places. That means you do not need to fix it in one place for it to work. It is great for places like construction sites, factories, warehouses and even outdoor events where people get together.
This machine costs, around ¥1.5 million before you pay tax so it is definitely something that companies would buy, not something you would buy for your home.
Why Is This Technology Needed?
The timing is important.
Japan is going through bad heat waves with temperatures going over 40°C in some places. They even have a term for days that hot it is called “kokushobi”. On July 15 a lot of people 48 people in Tokyo had to go to the hospital because of heatstroke. This shows how dangerous it is, for people who work or stay outside for a time.
Traditional air conditioning does not always work. You cannot always cool a construction site or a factory floor or a warehouse loading area like you do an office.
That creates a market for targeted cooling technology.
Rather than spending energy cooling a large space for everyone, a company can provide a dedicated recovery station where individual workers can cool down during breaks.
What It Means for Japan’s Technology Industry
The human fridge could be an early example of a much larger category: climate-adaptation technology.
Japan already has deep expertise in refrigeration, air conditioning, vending machines, robotics and industrial automation. Products such as the Do Hiemon Box combine several of these capabilities into a new application created by changing environmental condition
That could encourage Japanese technology companies to develop more specialised solutions for heat management. Cooling vests, wearable air conditioners, smart temperature sensors, heat-monitoring devices and portable cooling systems could all become increasingly important.
The opportunity is not limited to hardware manufacturers. Software companies could also benefit by developing systems that monitor workplace temperature, worker exposure and cooling breaks. Connected sensors could eventually allow employers to identify dangerous conditions and automatically recommend rest periods.
The Impact, on Business Could Be Big
For companies hot weather is turning into a problem that affects daily operations instead of just being something that happens during the summer.
Companies that build things move goods make products and plan events have to deal with the problem of keeping workers safe while still getting work done. A cooling shelter that can be moved around gives business owners another way to handle the heat.
The product is also reported to consume roughly half the electricity of a typical spot air conditioner, making targeted cooling potentially more attractive where cooling an entire facility would be inefficient.
However, the economics will determine how widely these systems spread. At ¥1.5 million per unit, businesses will need to compare the purchase price with alternatives such as air-conditioned rest areas, cooling clothing, portable air conditioners and other workplace measures.
There is also a capacity limitation: one booth serves one person at a time. Large worksites could therefore require multiple units during extreme heat.
From Novelty to a Growing Industry
The “human fridge” may sound strange, but its underlying business logic is straightforward: when the environment becomes harder to control, companies invest in technology that helps people adapt to it.

Japan’s experience could provide a preview of what other countries face as heatwaves become more disruptive. Technologies initially designed for Japanese workplaces could eventually find markets across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and other regions experiencing extreme temperatures.
The bigger story is therefore not the refrigerator itself. It is the emergence of a new technology market focused on keeping people productive and safe in increasingly hostile climates.
Japan’s human cooling booths demonstrate how quickly industrial technology can evolve when an environmental problem becomes a business necessity. If extreme heat continues to intensify, the next generation of workplace technology may be designed not just to make work smarter—but to make it physically possible in a hotter world.
