HashPort Co., Ltd. has completed Japan’s first proof-of-concept (PoC) for stablecoin payments at a convenience store, successfully demonstrating the technology at the Lawson Takanawa Gateway City store on August 6, 2026.
The pilot used HashPort Wallet as the customer payment application and HashPort Wallet for Biz as the merchant payment platform. The demonstration confirmed that stablecoin transactions could be processed through a standard Lawson point-of-sale (POS) system without requiring the store to create or manage its own cryptocurrency wallet.
According to HashPort, the trial is the first successful integration of stablecoin payments with a convenience store POS system in Japan. It also represents the country’s first gasless stablecoin payment implementation, allowing transactions to be completed without users paying blockchain network fees.

During the demonstration, customers generated a JPYC payment barcode within HashPort Wallet, which was scanned directly by the Lawson POS system to complete the purchase.
The pilot was conducted on August 6, 2026, at the Lawson Takanawa Gateway City store. HashPort Wallet served as the customer wallet, while HashPort Wallet for Biz handled payment acceptance on the merchant side. The stablecoin used throughout the trial was the Japanese yen-backed stablecoin JPYC.
The demonstration evaluated several operational factors, including POS system integration, checkout procedures, payment processing speed, and the overall usability of the wallet during retail transactions.
HashPort said the pilot supports the growing adoption of stablecoins in Japan as the country’s regulatory and market environment for issuance and circulation continues to evolve.
The company plans to position HashPort Wallet for Biz as a payment solution for the retail, food service, and broader service industries. By using stablecoins, the platform aims to address issues associated with existing digital payment methods, including transaction fees and settlement cycles, while making stablecoin payments a practical option for everyday commerce.
HashPort also outlined several planned enhancements for HashPort Wallet for Biz. Upcoming releases will include multi-wallet support and privacy payment capabilities. In addition, the company intends to begin pilot deployments at two dental clinics in Japan’s Kanto region as part of efforts to expand stablecoin payment use into the healthcare sector.
Looking ahead, HashPort is also preparing for broader adoption of AI-powered commerce. The company plans to launch HashPort Wallet MCP in September 2026, adding support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging standard for securely connecting digital wallets with AI agents.
The integration will allow AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT to interact with HashPort Wallet, enabling users to perform tasks such as checking balances, transferring stablecoins, and accessing Web3 services through natural language instructions. HashPort stated that every asset transfer will continue to require explicit user approval, while the wallet will maintain its non-custodial design, allowing users to retain control of their private keys.
Through these initiatives, HashPort aims to expand stablecoin adoption beyond pilot projects and establish its wallet platform as a foundation for digital payments and AI-driven commerce in Japan.
