Gunze Limited is pleased to announce that its wholly owned subsidiary, Gunze Green has developed a calculation method to visualize carbon dioxide absorption quantities from greening projects and quantify their reduction contributions through an industry-academia collaboration research project with the Urban Research Center at Kyushu University.
This calculation technology aims to quantify CO2 reduction contributions through not only CO2 absorption from forest management within existing environmental credit frameworks but also business activities, such as supplying trees for greening projects. Furthermore, the methodology is scheduled to be presented at the 14th International Symposium on Eco-Design and Inverse Manufacturing (EcoDesign 2025) in November 2025 and subsequently published in an academic paper.
Gunze Green will continue its efforts to promote the concept of carbon credits and advance the visualization and evaluation of environmental value in the urban greening.

Method for Calculating CO2 Reduction Contributions Based on Proprietary Calculation Technology
Through our joint research with Kyushu University, we have developed a new method for quantitatively evaluating the amount of CO2 absorbed by planted trees over a 100-year growth period. The method estimates increases in tree height and diameter, as well as survival rates, over the target period. Using this data, the method calculates the increase in tree volume to determine CO2 absorption per tree.
This method objectively demonstrates the extent to which the supply of trees in greening projects contributes to CO2 reduction, offering a different perspective than evaluations derived from conventional forest management.
Gunze Green’s Carbon Credit Certification Scope
The certification process considers the roles of all parties involved in greening projects, including project owners, designers, contractors (general construction and landscaping), Gunze Green, and producers involved in tree supply.
Gunze Green classified trees shipped in one year into nine species categories and calculated their total CO2 absorption over 100 years. Based on these estimates, the Natural Capital Credit Consortium certified the CO2 absorption over a three-year period.
Gunze Green’s Greening Business
Over the past five years, Gunze Green’s greening business has planted approximately 25 million trees nationwide. The cumulative CO2 reduction contribution from this initiative exceeds 23,000 tons. Currently, we are leveraging the quantified environmental value as carbon offsets within the Gunze Group. We are incorporating these offsets into the BODY WILD products of our apparel business, thereby establishing a unique environmental contribution model.
Going forward, we plan to work with project owners and other organizations to share the environmental benefits of this initiative with the public.
