Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) has announced the development of “Multi-Profile SIM 2.0,” a new SIM card that enables direct connection to both NTT Docomo and KDDI networks without relying on roaming. The innovation solves cost and reliability problems in IIJ’s original Multi-Profile SIM, launched in 2022. This SIM stored two communication profiles but needed roaming for one. This requirement increased expenses when transferring large data volumes.
The upgraded version lets you switch carriers easily. It does this based on signal strength and network conditions. This ensures stable connectivity and helps lower costs. This ensures better backup during network outages. It also helps maintain reliable communication where one carrier’s coverage is weak. The solution is especially useful for IoT setups that span large areas or include mobile devices traveling between regions.

IIJ verified the system’s redundancy in a proof-of-concept trial. They plan to launch the service commercially in fiscal 2025. The company is exploring closed network connectivity. This feature, requested by enterprise customers, aims to boost security and reliability for various use cases.
