UiPath teams up with Microsoft to support Japanese companies modernize mainframe applications with Microsoft Azure and GitHub Copilot. The combined solution reduces migration risks and supports modernization of essential applications and the acceleration of innovation.
Despite being built on mainframes and COBOL applications, the public and private sectors and manufacturing, retail and financial organizations all still use these for vital processes and procedures. Increasing numbers of COBOL engineers and support crunches are beginning to make supporting such systems a real challenge, in addition to integrating such legacy technology with cloud platforms and AI agents. Testing such machinery can prove costly too.
To that end, the company is planning to combine its Maestro and Test Cloud technologies with support for GitHub Copilot. UiPath’s Cartographer tool dissects legacy applications to capture business rules, exceptions, workarounds and other operational knowledge that helps drive modernization.

These requirements drive Copilot agents to recreate the apps on Microsoft Azure. UiPath Maestro leverages control towers to orchestrate workflows and approval processes across older and newer systems. And Test Cloud ensures that the replacement app works as intended.
The solution harnesses four Microsoft technologies. Microsoft Azure and Foundry deliver scalable cloud workload, security and AI; Github Copilot capture the code being examined and reconstructed with humans validating the replacements; UiPath Maestro orchestrates the workflow and approvals; and Test Cloud generates tests using the new and legacy systems against business logic before they are migrated.
This will allow businesses to assess older systems, accelerate migration timelines and verify application performance while not compromising critical service.
