LG Electronics and Marriott International have signed a strategic partnership to develop technology aimed at the next generation of smart hotels. The initial focus will be on smart hotel TVs and a cloud-based platform that brings entertainment, hotel information and room services together.
The partnership was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed at Marriott International’s headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. Marriott plans to introduce the platform at participating properties, where it will also be used for device management and to create a more consistent technology experience across its hotel network.
The idea goes beyond putting a smarter TV in a hotel room. LG and Marriott want the television to become a central digital touchpoint for guests. From entertainment and hotel information to room functions, different services can be accessed through the same platform. The system supports more than 40 OTT apps and over 250 channels.
For hotel teams, the cloud-based platform brings device management into a single environment. Operators can monitor TVs and other in-room technology at the room, property, brand and portfolio levels. They can also identify issues earlier, respond to problems and manage content and application updates without relying as heavily on traditional on-premise video distribution systems.

Marriott will help shape the platform around guest experience, hotel operations and enterprise system integration. LG will lead platform development, device management capabilities and technical support.
We are beginning with 40 Marriott locations in the United States and Canada. Once the pilot is done, the team will look at whether they should add more Marriott hotels in other countries.
The partnership could eventually extend beyond guest rooms too. LG and Marriott are looking at connected digital experiences and centralized management for areas such as lobbies and lounges, moving toward a more connected technology setup across the hotel.
