U-NEXT and NBCUniversal have entered into a comprehensive strategic partnership in Japan. The agreement goes beyond movie and TV distribution, covering streaming, Universal Studios Japan, live events, joint marketing and the overseas expansion of Japanese content.
One of the main parts of the partnership is Universal+, NBCUniversal’s global streaming brand. U-NEXT will become the exclusive platform for Universal+ in Japan, with the service scheduled to start rolling out from October 2026. NBCUniversal will hold on to its current slate of films and drama shows. U-NEXT is also set to get new movies right after they hit theaters. Next spring, U-NEXT plans to add major drama series to its lineup.
Both companies will work together on ideas linked to Universal Studios Japan. That park turns 25 in 2026. Plans include joint music performances and events, exclusive experiences for U-NEXT members and discussions around a special USJ video project.

The partnership also gives Japanese content a route into overseas markets through NBCUniversal’s global network. U-NEXT plans to explore distribution through platforms such as Peacock in the US and Universal+ in Central and South America, covering Japanese dramas, anime, movies and U-NEXT originals.
With more than 5.2 million paid subscribers as of May 2026, U-NEXT is looking to move further beyond streaming and connect Japanese content with a much larger global entertainment ecosystem.
