Cloudera and Mercy Corps have introduced VERA, an autonomous AI system designed to speed up research, analysis, and reporting for humanitarian operations. Built using Cloudera AI Studios on AWS and powered by Anthropic’s Claude models, the platform helps aid teams turn scattered information into usable local intelligence during crises.
The project began more than two years ago as an experiment to test how enterprise AI could support humanitarian work. It has since evolved into a production system already being used in Sudan, Colombia, and parts of Central and East Africa for food security analysis, election monitoring, infectious disease tracking, and crisis reporting.
The impact appears significant. Mercy Corps says security report preparation in Colombia has been cut by as much as 90 percent, while research work supporting Sudan operations has been reduced from nearly a week to just a few days. The organizations also expect meaningful cost savings across reporting workflows.

The bigger story sits beyond efficiency gains. Humanitarian organizations often work with a pretty small crew, fragmented data, and urgent timelines, like constantly on the move. VERA reflects a growing shift toward autonomous AI systems that can take on information-heavy tasks and help field teams make decisions faster, but speed is kind of a real consequence, not just a buzz word.
