Mazda Motor Corporation has partnered with Yamaguchi Prefecture and Iwakuni City. They will build the new ‘Mazda Motor Corporation Iwakuni Plant’ together.’ This project will boost growth and innovation in the area. This new facility will focus on lithium-ion battery cells for cars. Mazda announced the project in January. This will be the company’s first new plant in Japan since the Hofu No.2 Plant opened in 1992. Construction will start in November. Plant operations are set to begin in fiscal year 2027.
The Iwakuni Plant will assemble modules with lithium-ion battery cells. These cells come from Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. Then, they will be integrated into full battery packs. The facility is key to Mazda’s electrification strategy. It will help the company meet customer needs and adjust to new global environmental rules.
