MaxLinear has introduced RackCommander, a portfolio designed to support control-plane architectures for increasingly complex AI and data center racks. The portfolio brings together USB UARTs, RS-485 transceivers, GPIO expanders, power management, and protection technologies, for connectivity, monitoring, telemetry, and also rack-level control, not just the obvious parts.

The move suggests a wider shift in AI infrastructure from server centric designs into rack-scale setups, with multiple compute trays, accelerators power systems, cooling gear, sensors, and management controllers, all in the same space. RackCommander is designed to assist hyperscalers, OEMs, ODMs, and infrastructure providers to coordinate those spread out resources via a focused control plane. As AI systems become more tightly packed, you end up needing rack-level visibility, service access, power monitoring, and independent management, which are getting more and more critical.
