PlanetSense Inc. and FishPass Inc. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding a business alliance to promote collaboration in the field of environmental monitoring, utilizing technology that detects the presence of organisms from DNA left in the environment and sensing technology that collects information in places where infrastructure such as power sources and mobile phone networks are not in place.
The two companies have positioned this collaboration as the “Planet Path Project,” aiming to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the natural environment by combining clues to where organisms inhabit with information that conveys what is happening at observation sites.
We will explore its use in understanding the state of the natural environment and aquaculture environment, including measures against damage caused by wild animals such as bears, as well as rapid environmental changes caused by heavy rains and river flooding, which have become more frequent in recent years. Our aim is to provide information that will be useful when local governments, companies, and research institutions consider surveys and countermeasures.

Both companies, selected for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ “ICT Startup League,” are conducting research and development in the fields of environmental DNA and wide-area sensing. Their interaction through program support led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaboration, recognizing the complementary relationship between their technologies as they capture environmental information from different perspectives.
Understanding the habitat status of wild animals and aquatic environments, and implementing appropriate management and countermeasures, requires both information on the target organisms and information that captures changes in the field. On the other hand, conducting continuous surveys over large areas requires manpower and time. In particular, in mountainous areas, forests, and large bodies of water, limitations on power and communication environments also pose challenges to information gathering.
PlanetSense develops technology that uses low-power sensors and long-range communication to deliver local information to remote locations. FishPass has accumulated knowledge to understand habitat conditions and distribution by analyzing DNA, which is a trace of living organisms. By combining the different strengths of the information they can obtain and their observation methods, the two companies will gain an understanding of the natural environment from multiple perspectives, explore the feasibility of demonstration both domestically and internationally, and jointly explore business opportunities in areas such as environment, fisheries, and wildlife damage, including Southeast Asia.
