Japan is moving quickly to boost their efforts at carbon removal, with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Hitachi, and Japan Airlines (JAL) agreeing to an MoU to launch Japan’s first DOC pilot project on Kume Island in Okinawa Prefecture. This will be an experiment for the first DOC technology in order to understand whether or not it is possible to remove CO2 from the seawater, which would represent a major step forward for Japan in the development of new carbon removal technologies that can ensure future carbon neutrality.
Unlike traditional carbon capture technology, which captures CO2 from the industrial facility emissions, DOC captures the dissolved CO2 from seawater. Due to the fact that the ocean already absorbs about one-fourth of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, capturing CO2 from the seawater will provide the opportunity for the ocean to absorb more carbon from the atmosphere constantly.

While MOL is responsible for providing maritime logistics, Hitachi will deliver digital solutions along with engineering services. JAL participates in the pilot project as a result of its efforts to reduce aviation carbon emissions and explore high-quality carbon removal technology.
The pilot will be carried out on Kume Island, which is already known for renewable energy and marine technologies.
