BostonGene has started a kind of strategic research collaboration with Kyoto University, mainly to help with biomarker discovery, for combination immunotherapy in people who have advanced gastrointestinal cancers. This partnership is connected to a multicenter Phase II clinical trial run by Kyoto University, and the trial is looking at a treatment strategy that mixes immune checkpoint inhibitors with photodynamic therapy. Also, the investigator initiated study is financially supported by Meiji Seika Pharma, so there’s that piece in the middle.
In this setup, BostonGene will rely on its AI driven analytics platform to look through genomic, transcriptomic, immune, and clinical information that comes out of the trial. The aim is to spot biological markers and immune response patterns that seem tied to either treatment success, or resistance. In other words, the researchers want a clearer view of which patients are most likely to benefit from these combination approaches.

What they expect to see later is that the results will help guide future clinical trial planning, and also support better biomarker based patient selection. Over time, it should help strengthen the development of more targeted immunotherapy strategies, though maybe not instantly. More generally, the collaboration kind of shows how AI is taking on a broader role in cancer research, because merging multiple layers of patient data is increasingly important for moving precision medicine forward, and for supporting better, more informed treatment decisions.
