Star Micronics and MagTek said they’ve rolled out a new technology tie-in, basically doing away with the old style passwords and those physical keys, and switching to digital authentication tokens for retail hardware. The whole idea is that businesses can keep access to their connected bits more organized, specifically for things like cash drawers, printers, and payment terminals, all managed via one single point of sale app.
In this collaboration they bring in identity based authentication, and it kind of reaches past the usual user logins, going into actual device to device moments. So instead of using the same shared credentials, a business can use short lived digital tokens to okay actions like processing payments, opening cash drawers, printing receipts, or even approving manager overrides. Overall, it should make security tighter, while retailers get more sight into what’s going on, and also more control over who can access which device.
The announcement also reflects a wider shift in retail technology, where cloud managed applications are replacing hardware dependent store setups. By allowing web based POS platforms to communicate directly with connected peripherals, retailers can reduce infrastructure complexity, simplify operations, and make better use of shared hardware across stores.

MagTek’s DynaFlex II device combines payment processing with authentication capabilities in a single platform, supporting EMV, NFC, mobile wallets, barcode scanning, and real time communication. Star Micronics complements this by enabling cloud connected printing and cash drawer management across multiple retail environments, including stores, self-service kiosks, and curbside payment locations.
Together, the companies are positioning the technology to help software vendors and retailers build more secure, flexible, and connected payment environments without relying on conventional passwords or physical access controls.
