Mitsubishi Power, a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. MHI announced a big order. They will supply two M701JAC gas turbines along with extra equipment for the Al Wahda Open Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant. The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) owns and operates the facility.
The Al Wahda Power Plant is near Al Wahda Dam in Morocco’s Ouazzane Province. It will help stabilize the country’s national grid. This peaker power plant will work well with Morocco’s expanding renewable energy system. It will quickly respond to changes in the grid and provide a reliable power supply. Once operational, the plant’s two advanced gas turbines will generate a combined 990 MW, accounting for nearly 7% of Morocco’s total grid capacity.
ONEE signed the agreement at its headquarters in Rabat. Attendees included Mr. Tarik Hamane, the CEO of ONEE, and Javier Cavada, the Presiden of Mitsubishi Power EMEA. Khalid Salem, the MENA President, was present. He joined members from China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited (CEEC), the project’s partner.
Mitsubishi Power’s M701JAC gas turbines exhibit high efficiency. They can co-fire hydrogen with natural gas. This technology supports Morocco’s long-term sustainability goals. This advanced technology supports the country’s decarbonization goals while maintaining grid stability.
Morocco is boosting its renewable energy capacity. The Al Wahda Power Plant plays a key role in this effort. It ensures reliability and availability. This support helps Morocco aim for over 52% renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030. The plant can adjust to load changes with speed. It also handles frequent start-ups and shutdowns. Balancing the grid is important as we use renewable energy sources more often.
The Al Wahda Power Plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2027.
Mitsubishi Power also signed a long-term service agreement with ONEE. This deal covers parts, repairs, and maintenance services. It helps ensure the equipment remains reliable and available.
