NetApp just rolled out something that feels obvious in hindsight. It introduced Amazon S3 Access Points for FSx for NetApp ONTAP, which basically lets enterprise file data talk to AWS AI, ML, and analytics services without the usual data-shuffling circus. Anything sitting on FSx for ONTAP whether in the cloud or back in an on-prem box can now be accessed through the S3 API. That means teams can push ahead with AI and analytics work without migrating data and without losing the ability to read and write through their normal file protocols.
NetApp is fond of reminding all European enterprise storage market players that it is the one and only player having first-party services built natively on AWS. Okay, that is fair enough. Pairing FSx for ONTAP with Amazon S3 Access Points lets customers treat their ONTAP file systems almost like S3 buckets. Any AWS service or ISV tool that speaks S3 can hook right in.
ONTAP’s replication chops also come into play here. Moving data across hybrid environments becomes straightforward, so users can tap into on-prem data through FSx for ONTAP without friction. And once that data is reachable via S3, the whole menu of AI, ML, serverless, and analytics services is on the table. Teams can also assign named, permission-controlled access points for each app or user which keeps management sane.

Another upside is that nothing has to move out of ONTAP to feed AI services. That means all of ONTAP’s security muscle stays active including real-time ransomware detection and baked-in snapshots. This is one of those updates that quietly unlocks a lot of power without forcing enterprises to rewire their entire stack.
