Square, Inc., which provides card payment terminals, POS, online payments and other services to small and medium-sized businesses, supporting cashless transactions and store operations, began offering Square AI in Japan on March 10. Square AI is a free conversational AI assistant built directly into the Square platform that instantly analyzes business data accumulated through payments and sales management, helping businesses of all sizes make faster and more accurate management decisions.
A recent survey conducted by Square* revealed that awareness of AI is increasing among Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with 35.2% reporting that they are currently using AI, while only 19.2% are using it regularly. Regular AI use among Japanese companies remains limited, indicating that AI adoption is still in the early stages for many companies. The survey also revealed that SME managers spend an average of 3.66 hours per week analyzing business data. Data-driven decision-making is becoming increasingly important in an environment where ensuring profit margins and making quick business decisions are essential. 69.6% of respondents to this survey stated that they feel more confident when their decisions are supported by data and insights. Since management needs objective evidence in addition to human judgment, AI is most effective when used to complement existing decision-making processes.
Square AI, now available free of charge to all businesses using Square, is a conversational artificial intelligence assistant built on Square’s integrated platform. Key features include instant access to sales and performance data through natural language questioning, automatic visualization of performance trends, and the ability to analyze sales data combined with contextual information such as seasonal factors and local events. Businesses also receive guidance on how to utilize Square’s features. These features are accessible through Square Data (the Square Data app or web), allowing them to access business data-based decision-making resources wherever they are. It is designed to work seamlessly within existing business processes, with no additional systems or complex integrations required.
