Nokia has expanded its collaboration with SoftBank through a new agreement focused on modernizing and expanding Japan’s 4G and 5G network infrastructure. Under this deal, Nokia will supply its latest Air Scale radio access equipment to upgrade existing systems and extend 5G standalone coverage across western Japan.
The rollout will include Nokia’s Air Scale Radio Access Network solutions featuring Habrok Massive MIMO radios and Air Scale baseband units. Nokia has employed its ReefShark System-On-Chip technology in all these applications, which not only provides high performance but also improves coverage and increases capacity along with reduced energy consumption. Moreover, the MantaRay platform of Nokia, which is powered by AI, will be implemented in the company SoftBank’s communication management and self-organization, thus enabling the company’s activities to be more efficient and reliable in terms of throughputs and overall performance.

The two companies have had a collaboration for many years and this expansion has made the partnership stronger even more. Besides, Nokia and SoftBank are among the first companies to join the AI-RAN Alliance, which is a group formed to investigate future technologies such as AI-RAN and 6G. Their joint research covers everything from virtualized RAN development to real-world field trials. They’re also currently testing Massive MIMO technology in Tokyo’s 7 GHz band, a key frequency expected to play a major role in 6G networks.
