LegalTech Co., Ltd. has begun offering an “AI pre-investigation workflow” for chemical manufacturers as part of its AI knowledge platform “IPGenius” for intellectual property and research and development.
This workflow uses AI to organize patent specifications, experimental data, research notes, and tabular data of examples and comparative examples in the chemical field, supporting the organization of information that serves as the basis for prior art searches and FTO searches.
Specifically, the formulations and conditions evaluated are extracted from the examples and comparative examples, and material names, product names, abbreviations, etc., are organized into general names, chemical names, and higher-level concepts. This streamlines the creation of search term candidates needed before the investigation, the organization of the company’s technology structure, and cross-sectional searches of past projects.

Background: The burden of pre-investigation preparation in the field of chemistry
In the research and development and intellectual property work of chemical manufacturers, a wide variety of materials and formulation conditions, including resins, fillers, additives, curing agents, solvents, pigments, and functional materials, are described in patent specifications and experimental data.
On the other hand, in practice, the following tasks arise.
- Extract the formulations that were actually evaluated from the examples and comparative examples.
- Organize material names, product names, abbreviations, and model numbers.
- Identify the general terms, chemical terms, and higher-level concepts that should be used for searching.
- Break down the structure of your own technology into a form that can be compared with other companies’ patents.
- Check if there are any similar formulations or case studies from the past.
While these tasks are important prerequisites for prior art searches and FTO searches, they are areas where the level of detail and search criteria tend to vary, as they are highly dependent on the experience and knowledge of the person in charge.
