Miyagi Prefecture (Governor of Miyagi Prefecture: Yoshihiro Murai) and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corporation are pleased to announce that they concluded an agreement on the promotion of smart land-based aquaculture on January 21, 2025 with the aim of resolving regional issues related to the fisheries industry, such as declining fish catches and destabilization of aquaculture production due to changes in the marine environment, and further strengthening efforts toward the development of a sustainable fisheries industry through the promotion of land-based aquaculture techniques that utilize advanced technology. The agreement is as follows:
1. Purpose and Background
The purpose of this agreement is to promote close mutual cooperation and collaboration between Miyagi Prefecture and NTT East, thereby promoting the development and dissemination of land-based aquaculture techniques that utilize advanced technology, thereby promoting the sustainable development of the fisheries industry through stable and efficient production of marine products.
2. Cooperation matters
In order to achieve the above objectives, Miyagi Prefecture and NTT East will cooperate and collaborate on the following matters:
(1) Use of ICT in land-based aquaculture and related businesses
(2) Energy conservation in land-based aquaculture facilities and the promotion of renewable energy use
(3) Other initiatives that contribute to the promotion of smart land-based aquaculture (to be set appropriately and in a separate discussion)

4. Future initiatives
Through mutual cooperation, we will promote the verification and implementation of advanced technologies that contribute to labor-saving, energy-saving, and production efficiency in land-based aquaculture businesses. Through the efforts shown in Figure 2, we aim to develop a sustainable fisheries industry in Miyagi Prefecture in the future.
