Edelman has appointed Campbell Hanley as CEO and Representative Director of its Japan business, marking a leadership transition at the global communications firm. Hanley began serving as president of Edelman Japan on November 1, 2026, and is scheduled to formally become Representative Director and President on December 1.
He succeeds Meghan Barstow, who has led Edelman Japan since 2020 and is set to leave the company on December 31 after a 20-year career with the firm. Hanley and Barstow will work together during November and December to support the transition and maintain continuity for employees and clients.
Hanley brings more than two decades of experience in Japan across communications, journalism, digital, creative and agency leadership. Before joining Edelman, he served as Head of Client Experience and Growth for Asia Pacific at Omnicom Public Relations.
He previously held the position of Managing Director at Weber Shandwick Japan, where he helped expand the agency’s capabilities beyond traditional public relations to include digital, creative, influencer marketing, content and integrated communications.
Earlier in his career, Hanley spent nearly a decade working as a journalist and editor at The Mainichi. He also held senior positions at digital and media agencies in Japan, giving him experience across both the media and communications industries.

The appointment comes as Edelman continues to focus on Japan as a priority market. The company sees opportunities to support Japanese businesses pursuing international growth, as well as multinational companies operating in Japan.
Rakesh Thukral, Edelman’s CEO for Asia Pacific, highlighted Hanley’s understanding of the Japanese market and experience across communications, media, digital and creative disciplines as important strengths for the business.
Hanley said he sees opportunities to bring together Edelman’s expertise in trust, integrated communications and stakeholder engagement to help clients navigate business transformation and strengthen relationships with their audiences.
His appointment places an executive with extensive experience in Japan’s communications and agency sectors at the helm of Edelman’s local operations. The leadership transition will also mark the end of Barstow’s tenure, during which she led the company’s Japan business and contributed to its development across the Asia Pacific region.
