Medley Inc. has developed a new “AI assist function” for its dispensing product “MEDIXS” on “MEDLEY AI CLOUD,” a next-generation medical platform that connects medical institutions with patients and consumers, and will begin offering it sequentially.
By promoting digital transformation in dispensing pharmacies through the use of AI, we aim to improve the experience of patients who use pharmacies by solving the challenges that many pharmacists face in their work, while also increasing work efficiency.
As the shortage of medical and healthcare personnel becomes more serious, improving operational efficiency through the promotion of digital transformation and other measures has become an urgent issue in Japan’s medical fields.

In addition, dispensing pharmacies are expected to play a part in local medical care as “family pharmacies” that support patients’ health through communication that makes use of their expertise in the dispensing field, as the 2022 revision of dispensing fees will expand the evaluation of interpersonal interactions at pharmacies.
In a recent survey*1 conducted by Medley targeting pharmacists working at dispensing pharmacies, more than 80% of pharmacists felt that they had challenges in dispensing work and interpersonal work, with nearly half of them citing challenges such as “I am sometimes unable to effectively communicate the matters that need to be confirmed when interviewing patients, or I am at risk of missing something (56.1%),” “I am sometimes unable to properly conduct pharmaceutical analysis or consideration of prescription contents myself, or am unable to analyze or judge them immediately (50.7%),” and “It takes a long time to create medication histories (49.2%).”
Furthermore, when it comes to interpersonal work, there is variation in the knowledge and experience of pharmacists, and more than half of them feel that they are not able to provide consistent quality of care to patients. Regardless of years of employment, many pharmacists see the issue of “taking too much time to analyze, evaluate, and extract important points” when providing medication instructions, which results in long waiting times for patients.
In addition, nearly half of the pharmacists want a system for dispensing pharmacies to support them in checking for risks of side effects due to polypharmacy and in obtaining necessary information from patients, including through medical interviews. It was found that many pharmacists want to improve the efficiency of highly specialized work through digital transformation, while providing a consistent quality of patient experience regardless of years of service or experience.
Based on these on-site needs, MEDIXS has developed an AI-assisted function that will be gradually rolled out to streamline the most time-consuming aspects of dispensing work. As a result, it not only reduces the workload of pharmacists, but also helps them demonstrate their specialized knowledge, enabling them to provide smooth, consistent quality interpersonal services even during busy periods and for those with little experience working in dispensing pharmacies.
