STMicroelectronics has introduced STPay-Topaz-2, a next-generation system-on-chip (SoC) for contactless payment cards. The device offers high flexibility, supporting multiple payment brands and simplifying customer inventory management. New auto-tuning capabilities ensure high connection quality regardless of reader, improving the user experience, while advanced encryption enhances security, enabling the platform to meet upcoming tightening industry standards.
ST has already shipped over 3 billion STPay SoC products into the payment market. The capabilities introduced in STPay-Topaz-2 simplify inventory management for card manufacturers by allowing a large number of payment applets to be preloaded into one product part number available in the market. This innovation includes unique product versioning, incorporating the latest and most popular global payment applets, such as Visa’s VSDC2.8.1g1 and 2.9.2 applets.
“Contactless payments are gaining acceptance from consumers, and further advances in the technology are expected as card suppliers strive to address wider market requirements in addition to growing customer demand,” said Bruno Batut, Marketing Director, Banking & ID Business Unit, STマイクロエレクトロニクス‘ Connected Security Division. “STPay-Topaz-2 simplifies inventory management for card manufacturers by allowing integration with numerous payment apps with just one orderable part number, paving the way for greater adoption of contactless payments. It also adds auto-tuning capabilities to ensure a great user experience wherever you are and upgraded security to support future standards such as the upcoming EMVCo C-8 kernel.”

STPay-Topaz-2 is based on the ST31R480 secure microcontroller , manufactured in ST’s secure and certified factory in France. The ST31R480 is EMVCo certified in November 2024 and was recently Common Criteria EAL6+ certified.
The STPay solution helps lay the foundation for the payments industry to build stronger digital security – from RSA/3DES encryption to Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). STPay-Topaz-2 is also designed to be compliant with the upcoming EMVCo C 8 kernel. The platform is also GlobalPlatform and Java Card compliant, making it ideal for payment, loyalty programs and custom applications.
In addition, STPay-Topaz-2’s improved wireless communication performance allows card manufacturers to easily integrate antennas and efficiently connect smaller antennas, providing greater design flexibility.
