Ericsson and SoftBank Corp. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a strategic partnership towards 2030. The partnership will evaluate, promote and co-create “NextWave Tech,” which includes new-age technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), Cloud RAN (Radio Access Network), XR (Extended Reality) and 6G (6th Generation Mobile Communications System). Through this partnership, the two companies aim to explore new use cases and innovate to shape the future of cellular networks and their architecture.
With the many possibilities expected from “NextWave Tech,” Ericsson and SoftBank are actively investing in the realization of these new technologies. These efforts, which aim to improve future business growth and cost efficiency, will contribute to creating new possibilities for the entire telecommunications industry. To achieve this goal, the two companies will work together to define the roadmap for future networks and work on initiatives that are aligned with each company’s long-term vision, thereby ensuring leadership in the telecommunications industry.
Ericsson and SoftBank will further deepen and expand their technology and business development collaboration in key areas, including:
Assessing the commercial readiness of AI-integrated Cloud RAN with SMO (Service Management and Orchestration)/rApps (Radio Network Applications)
Developing an efficient and effective network design strategy to support emerging use cases such as XR
Exploring new ways to utilize radio waves by combining sensing and communications
Promote the effective use of centimeter wave technology and establish Japan’s position as a leader in 6G
