Asahi Kasei Corporation, has launched ULTEC Corporation. President Koshiro Kudo leads the company. ULTEC is in Chikusa-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Akira Yoshikawa is the CEO. This new venture is a spin-out from Asahi Kasei.
ULTEC focuses on developing and selling advanced devices. These devices use ultra-wide-gap semiconductor technology with aluminum nitride (AlN). Its portfolio includes deep ultraviolet laser diodes (UV-C LDs), far-UV LEDs, deep UV sensors, and high-voltage power devices. In June, ULTEC’s UV-C LD technology took third place in the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis. This award is famous around the world. It recognizes progress in laser technology.
ULTEC shows how Asahi Kasei uses its unique technologies in a fresh way. ULTEC wants to bring UV-C LDs into real use. They do this through Proof of Concept (PoC) projects and working with outside partners. This approach helps speed up the creation of new markets.

Background
Since 2017, Asahi Kasei Corporation’s Research and Development Headquarters has partnered with the Amano-Honda Laboratory at Nagoya University. They focus on research into UV-C LDs. This collaboration led to two world-first achievements: pulsed oscillation at room temperature in 2019 and continuous oscillation at room temperature in 2022.
These breakthroughs have gained a lot of attention in Japan and around the world. They could be useful in chemical and biological measurement tools and sterilization technologies. Expectations for future commercialization are high. But, this technology is in a pioneering field. A strong market has not yet been established.
