At CHI 2024 , the world’s leading international conference in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) , Principal Investigator Shigeaki Yoshida’s research group demonstrated and presented “Swarm Body,” which won the Popular Choice Honorable Mention award, which is determined by participant votes . “Honorable Mention” is the second highest award after the first place “Winner.”
The mission of the Integrated Interaction Group, a research group led by Yoshida, is to integrate and co-create various research fields centered on AI technology, to design new and better relationships between people and machines, people and people, and machines and machines, and to propose technologies and mechanisms that solve social issues and meet latent needs. The group is working on research to “intelligently connect” people and machines, such as technologies to integrate robots into people’s living spaces, technologies to expand and support communication between people, and behavior planning technologies that enable robots to work together in harmony.

“Swarm Body,” which was demonstrated at CHI 2024, is a system that represents swarm robots as an extension of one’s own body, allowing one to control the swarm robots as if they were one’s own hands. “Swarm Body” aims to realize remote communication that allows one to directly and flexibly interact with people and objects in remote locations through the movements and senses of one’s own body.
