HD Renewable Energy, a global leader in smart energy from Taiwan, has boosted its role in Japan’s battery energy storage system (BESS) market. In the 2025 round of Japan’s Long-Term Decarbonisation Power Source Auction, HDRE won five new BESS projects. These projects total around 300MW, which equals 1.5GWh. This achievement comes after the company’s 2024 milestone. It became the first Taiwanese firm to win projects under this national scheme. This marks its second year of success. It also boosts the company’s tech leadership and market credibility in Japan.
In the last auction round, HDRE won two BESS projects. They have a total capacity of 73MW (97.9MW installed) in Mie and Fukuoka prefectures. Both projects are set to start operations in 2027. In the 2025 round, the total BESS capacity awarded was about 1.37 GW. HDRE secured around 20% of this share, making it the only Taiwanese company to win large-scale BESS contracts. The new sites are in Aomori, Fukushima, and Hokkaido. The biggest one is close to 100MW in capacity. Each project is eligible for 20-year government-backed capacity payments.
HDRE aims to develop over 3GW of renewable energy in Japan, including 400MW of solar and 2.6GW of BESS capacity. The company is expanding its smart energy services. This portfolio includes power retail, energy management systems, and aggregation technologies. Its project pipeline features key developments: a joint effort with Tokyu Fudosan Holdings in Gunma. This initiative got a JPY 1.19 billion subsidy from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It’s set to finish in early 2028. Another project, “Project Hikari,” is in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and is being developed with Brawn Capital. It aims for commercial operations by the end of 2025.
