Aisin Corporation and JEOL Ltd. have jointly developed a portable bulk compact NMR system that brings nuclear magnetic resonance analysis closer to where research actually happens. This setup does not use refrigerants. It is made for use at a bench in lab and research rooms.
NMR helps people look at chemical structure in many fields. It is used in pharma, biotech, chemistry, food science, and materials work. Most older NMR units are big. They also rely on coolants like liquid helium. They need room for special installation.
The new unit tackles those issues. It uses bulk magnets made with high temperature superconductors. Aisin shared its know-how in cryogenic cooling and superconducting material work. JEOL shared its NMR know how and analysis skills. The team also worked with the RIKEN Center for Environmental Resource Science.

Even with its small build, it keeps the magnetic field fairly even. It also stays steady. It is in the 200 MHz class. Researchers can therefore analyze synthesized samples at the site instead of sending them to dedicated analytical facilities.
The portable design could support research at universities and educational institutions, as well as process monitoring and quality control at production sites.
The system will be shown as a reference exhibit at JASIS 2026, taking place at Makuhari Messe from September 2 to 4, 2026. Aisin and JEOL plan to continue development and expand practical access to NMR analysis.
