Ricoh Company, Ltd. and Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. have begun joint development of a private multimodal large-scale language model suitable for Sompo Japan’s insurance business. This joint development is being carried out as part of the “GENIAC (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge) ” project, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) with the aim of strengthening the development capabilities of generative AI in Japan.
LMM is an AI technology that can process multiple formats of data at once, including text, images, audio, and video. It is expected to be able to efficiently process data in a variety of formats, such as summarizing the content of screenshots of text information and appropriately answering questions using diagrams.
At GENIAC, Ricoh is working on developing an LMM that can be used by Japanese companies. The aim is to support innovation by efficiently utilizing documents and forms that consist of data in various formats, such as text, figures, tables, and images, that exist within a company.
Sompo Japan is also currently running a trial of the “Oshison LLM ” system, which automatically generates optimal responses to inquiries from both inside and outside the company by learning from insurance business regulations, manuals, Q&A data, etc. The documents in question contain many complex charts and graphs. Many Japanese documents and forms have their own unique formats, and there are cases where the existing LLM cannot provide accurate responses, making the accuracy of generating answers based on data an issue.
