Square and Sony Payment Services Inc. have launched a partnership to provide Square’s in-person digital payment technology through Sony Payment Services from May 13, 2025.
The partnership, which began today, is part of Square’s efforts to develop Japan’s digital economy. By combining Sony Payment Services’ expertise in online payments with Square’s in-person digital payments and business technology solutions, merchants using Sony Payment Services will be able to take advantage of Square’s best-in-class technology – the Square Reader, Square Terminal and iPhone touch payments – to expand their business from online to offline commerce and embrace digital payments.
Through this partnership, Sony Payment Service member stores will be able to use a variety of services, including POS functions such as face-to-face cashless payments, e-commerce, loyalty programs, sales management, and attendance management, as well as the ability to receive payments as soon as the next business day, in addition to the traditional online payment capabilities, by paying a processing fee.

Square and Sony Payment Services also plan to explore strengthening integration between the two companies’ products by utilizing APIs provided by Square.
Nomura Ryosuke, CEO of Sony Payments, said: “We are delighted to announce this collaboration with Square, a global payment innovator. Combining Square’s face-to-face payment capabilities, with their excellent design and usability, with our flexible and robust solutions in the non-face-to-face field, which we have cultivated over 30 years, we will support the next generation of commerce experiences that freely move between the real and digital worlds, and jointly create new value that lies beyond payments.”
Additionally, Stephen Adams, Japan head of Square, said: “At Square, our mission is to help make it easier for Japanese merchants to do business. As many businesses start selling online and expand their online stores in addition to in-person sales, bridging the gap between online and offline commerce is important. By combining our world-class digital payment technology with the online expertise of Sony Payment Services, we will enable even more merchants across Japan to seamlessly grow their businesses across in-person and non-face-to-face channels and continue to meet the evolving needs of their customers.”
Square and Sony Payment Services will work to expand the use of cashless payments in Japan, taking advantage of the government’s push for a cashless society in both online and offline business areas.
