Rakuten Bank has introduced the observability platform “New Relic” to monitor the core systems that support banking operations. New Relic announced this on July 24th. New Relic is said to be making a significant contribution to Rakuten Bank’s 24-hour uninterrupted operation. Rakuten Bank is a digital bank of the Rakuten Group that has continued to grow and develop since its predecessor, E-Bank, opened in 2001, and provides a wide range of financial services online, including deposits, payments, loans, and asset management. In particular, in recent years, the number of accounts and deposit balances have rapidly expanded due to the digital shift in lifestyles and collaboration with the huge “Rakuten economic sphere.” The number of accounts will exceed 17 million as of the end of May 2025, approximately double the number in five years, and the deposit balance has exceeded 11 trillion yen.
Due to this rapid growth, the core system has rapidly become larger, and in the event of a problem occurring in the system, it has become significantly more difficult to quickly identify the cause and maintain stable operation. Therefore, Rakuten Bank decided to introduce an observability platform to further improve the availability of its core systems. In selecting the product, after considering several products, the biggest deciding factor was that it had a very easy-to-understand user interface, and so they decided to introduce New Relic. With New Relic’s user interface, the development, infrastructure, and operations departments of the system headquarters could easily obtain the information they wanted, and it was determined that when a problem occurred, the cause could be quickly identified across departments. In addition, New Relic met strict security requirements, and the flexibility of being able to select the observation range of the system was also a major point in meeting Rakuten Bank’s security requirements. The bank introduced New Relic in 2022 and began observing its core system. After that, it migrated the infrastructure of its core system to a container platform built on “Red Hat OpenShift” and is gradually containerizing system functions, and New Relic is also used for this observation. Regular maintenance of the system is performed once a month, and the impact of the maintenance on the entire system is also checked using the New Relic dashboard. If any problems are found, such as a decrease in system response, measures are taken to return the system to its pre-maintenance state and prevent failures from occurring. Furthermore, Rakuten Bank’s core system generates a huge number of transactions on certain days each month, and previously, multiple engineers were required to monitor the system.
Since the introduction of New Relic, monitoring has been possible with a small number of engineers who are accustomed to using the product. Hayakawa Hajime, Executive Officer and General Manager of the Systems Division at Rakuten Bank, commented, “Thanks to New Relic, we can now closely monitor the operation status of not only the entire system, but also each and every service and system function, such as ‘opening an account,’ ‘transferring funds,’ and ‘logging in.’ As a result, even if a problem occurs, we can immediately determine the cause and request that the relevant departments take action. The speed at which we can identify the cause has improved dramatically.”Rakuten Bank has introduced the observability platform ” New Relic ” to monitor the core systems that support banking operations.
