Stripe and Tempo Launch Machine Payments Protocol

Stripe, a company that builds programmable financial services, has announced the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) in collaboration with Tempo, a blockchain specializing in payments. This open standard technology protocol enables AI agents to automatically process payments without human intervention . The protocol provides specifications for agents to execute payments programmatically, making it a common standard that enables small payments, recurring payments, and more.

Agentic commerce is a form of online shopping where AI agents search for, compare, and, in some cases, purchase products on behalf of consumers. Last year, Stripe released the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) , an open standard for agentic commerce, and the Agentic Commerce Suite (ACS) , which allows businesses to start selling through multiple AI agents . The Machine Payments Protocol complements ACP payments, which require human verification.

AI agents are expected to play a central role in the digital economy in the future, but a challenge remains: current internet systems are built for humans. Currently, purchasing transactions involve many steps requiring human intervention, such as creating accounts, comparing and selecting pricing and subscription plans, and entering payment and billing information, making them difficult for AI agents to use. Therefore, Stripe, in collaboration with Tempo, has announced the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard and internet-native protocol developed specifically for AI agents.

The Machine Payments Protocol (CPC) is essentially a wallet and a set of common rules for payment procedures, specifically designed for AI. This CPC allows AI agents to automatically execute payment transactions, such as small payments and recurring payments, programmatically. Stripe users can leverage the Payment Intents API , a payment processing API that ensures a secure and consistent flow from start to finish, to accept payments via the CPC with just a few lines of code, enabling AI agent-to-AI payments without human intervention. Payment methods include stablecoins via Shared Payment Tokens (SPT) , as well as fiat currencies via cards and deferred payment (BNPL).
