Chubu Electric Power Grid has completed the installation of 10 million smart meters through its collaboration with Oracle, marking a significant step in Japan’s power infrastructure modernization.
Oracle Japan announced that the milestone was achieved under the company’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) initiative. And as part of the project, Chubu Electric Power Grid was able to enhance it Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management (MDM) system to provide greater scalability, stability and continued support of interval data collection for residential and corporate meters.
The existing system supports second generation smart meters and allows for the collection of electricity consumption information every 15 minutes. The utility will be able to better monitor electricity usage and distribution of generation, improve grid operations and prepare for management of the evolving DER landscape and electricity demand.

The enhanced data capabilities also create an opportunity for Chubu electricity retailers. Retailers could provide alerts to consumers if consumption data indicates the customer is nearing targets and track the generation of solar power. The system also supports more precise pricing calculations through Smart AMI, allowing retailers to explore flexible time-of-use pricing programmes and help manage peak electricity demand.
Oracle has supported Chubu Electric Power Grid’s AMI initiatives since 2013, when its smart meter management system was introduced. The latest upgrade was implemented in collaboration with Hitachi and other partners, following development, testing and performance verification based on the utility’s operational requirements.
