Aqunia has signed a co-development agreement with resilience tech startup Spectee to build an AI-powered flood prediction system that combines hydrological simulations with real-time social media data. The joint effort has also been pulled into Japan’s 2026 SBIR Construction Technology Research and Development Grant Program, helpfully supporting efforts to strengthen flood forecasting in Japan, and in those infrastructure limited zones across Southeast Asia.
The partnership is tackling a rising hurdle, since climate change is bringing about more frequent city inundations, and the whole thing feels like it’s accelerating, a bit. Existing prediction systems often depend on detailed drainage network data, which is unavailable in many cities, especially across the Global South. Aqunia’s flood simulation technology will be combined with Spectee’s AI, which identifies flood locations and water levels from social media posts, images, and videos, to create a more flexible forecasting model.

The companies plan to test the technology for disaster preparedness, public infrastructure, and business continuity planning before they expand it across Asian markets. Their work also kind of builds on an earlier flood warning project in Vietnam, where both firms are already supporting local disaster resilience initiatives, so you can say it is not coming out of nowhere.
