Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. has launched new Maritime Cyber Insurance. This coverage shields shipping companies from the rising threat of cyberattacks on their systems and networks. Sales of the insurance product start in November 2025. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative in Japan’s maritime sector.
Cyber risks in global shipping are on the rise. Recent events include the 2023 ransomware attack at the Port of Nagoya. Also, there was a grounding in the Red Sea in 2025. Both incidents are thought to stem from cyber interference. More GPS spoofing and data manipulation cases show we need better maritime cybersecurity.
The new insurance policy provides full coverage for damages and losses due to cyberattacks. This includes costs for system restoration and investigations. Sompo Japan’s hull insurance is different. It covers both physical and cyber incidents. For example, it protects against ship grounding caused by fake navigation data.
