Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) announced on the 5th that it will provide a total of four micro data centers to two major infrastructure providers in Ukraine by fiscal year 2025 as part of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s “Private Sector Participation Promotion Project for Ukraine’s Reconstruction (Fast Track Program Application).
“The demonstration project, which began in May, is part of the project. The outdoor “DX Edge Hut” micro data centers will be provided to local telecommunications and power infrastructure providers for use in data center backup and substation equipment monitoring. IIJ will provide local operators with the expertise and technology necessary for micro data center operation and maintenance. IIJ will also verify the local needs and market viability of micro data centers, aiming to build a business foundation for future business expansion. Ukraine’s IT infrastructure has suffered serious damage from physical destruction and cyberattacks due to the war, making the resilience and decentralization of communications and IT equipment a pressing issue. Furthermore, as Ukraine continues to rebuild despite the ongoing war, demand for IT infrastructure reconstruction is rapidly increasing. In response to these circumstances, IIJ joined JICA’s “Project to Promote Private Sector Participation in Ukraine’s Reconstruction.” In fiscal year 2024, IIJ conducted a survey to identify the needs for small data centers in Ukraine, exploring the possibilities of decentralized deployment, infrastructure reconstruction, collaboration with local partner companies, and business model development.
The survey results confirmed the effectiveness of IIJ’s micro data centers for backing up critical infrastructure such as communications, IT, and power, relocating facilities due to the intensification of the war, and replacing building-based data centers that are difficult to build. Based on the results of this survey, IIJ will provide micro data centers to local businesses in a demonstration project, providing reconstruction support and promoting technology transfer and business foundation development for businesses with an eye toward future business expansion. Micro data centers are compact (approximately 1-2 meters high) equipped with the necessary data center equipment and functions, such as servers, power supplies, air conditioning, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They are highly portable, can be quickly deployed, and can be remotely operated, allowing them to be operated and managed even in environments with limited access.

In the demonstration project, one unit (DX edge Pro) will be provided to each of the telecommunications carrier’s bases in two cities. It will be operated as a backup system ensuring geographic redundancy and product evaluation will be conducted. In addition, two units (DX edge Hut) will be provided to one base of the power infrastructure provider and installed outdoors. They will be used for substation operation monitoring purposes to verify durability and operational stability in environments with dust, wind, and rain. Based on feedback from the micro data center service providers in the demonstration project, IIJ plans to conduct a more detailed study of the marketability and business scheme of micro data centers from fiscal 2026 onwards, and to promote business development through local micro data centers and IT services and solutions.
