Skygate Technologies Inc. is launching “DAIJA” as a new open innovation mechanism in the defense field. “DAIJA” aims to promote the creation of a sustainable security infrastructure and dual-use (military and civilian) solutions by bringing together cutting-edge technologies from private companies and startups to address the increasingly complex challenges faced by the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces.
In recent years, the security environment has become more complex than ever before, against the backdrop of rising geopolitical risks, the advancement of economic and security policies, and the rapid development of technological fields such as AI, quantum, space, and electromagnetic waves. Under these circumstances, the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces are being called upon to introduce new technologies and to implement swift decision-making processes, while the current defense industry structure faces several major challenges.
Market structure with limited customers: Customers are limited to the Ministry of Defense, making it difficult to ensure diversity and stability of demand, and providing little incentive for business scalability or sustainable product and business development.
High barriers to entry: A bidding system and defense-specific knowledge are required, making it difficult for new entrants to enter the industry
Human resource and technology gaps: Limited opportunities to link cutting-edge technologies held by startups and research institutes with defense needs.

As such, in the defense field, there continues to be a mismatch between the two sides: “We have the technology but it’s not there” and “We want to collaborate but there’s no system in place.”
