NEC announced that it has enhanced the performance of its in-house developed generative AI “cotomi,” aiming to promote the use of AI agents that improve productivity by automating highly specialized tasks. While maintaining high speed and high inference capabilities, it has improved agent performance and expanded context length. With NEC’s AI agent, cotomi autonomously breaks down tasks requested by users, designs the necessary business processes, selects the optimal AI and IT services for each task, and automatically executes the work.
In addition to enhancing cotomi’s performance, NEC has strengthened its collaboration with various AIs and external services and expanded the range of use by making it compliant with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) specifications, which is an AI agent protocol. There are three main points of enhancement: Improved agent performance in cotomi: Inference performance has been improved by strengthening learning that focuses on the process of problem solving, and task planning and tool selection capabilities have been enhanced, improving the processing power and processing speed of Agentic AI. Expanded context length in cotomi: The maximum context length has been significantly expanded to 128K, making it possible to handle long sentences of over 200,000 characters in Japanese. Support for agent protocol: Compliance with MCP specifications has made it easier to link with in-house services.

NEC is also working with Box as part of its efforts to strengthen external service linkages using MCP. NEC is the first domestic ISV partner to participate in the Box MCP server beta program provided by Box. Yashoda Bhavnani, vice president of AI products in Box’s product management division, said, “NEC is demonstrating leadership in promoting safer AI adoption within the enterprise as an early participant in our MCP beta program. By integrating Box’s intelligent content management with NEC’s advanced AI, we are bringing out new levels of productivity and business efficiency.” NEC will continue to promote the use of AI agents in companies, thereby supporting the advancement of business operations and contributing to the realization of a society in which everyone can use AI safely and securely.
