MHI Introduces Energy-Saving Membrane for Bioethanol

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has tested its new Mitsubishi Membrane Dehydration System (MMDS®) at a pilot plant in Nagasaki. The test achieved ethanol purity levels above 99.5 vol%, meeting Japan’s fuel standards. This is a big step for better bioethanol production. It helps make cleaner fuel options and meets the growing demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The MMDS® system uses a molecular sieve membrane separation process instead of the traditional pressure swing adsorption (PSA) method. This innovation cuts energy use by over 30%. It also separates ethanol and water in the liquid phase. This leads to smaller plant designs and lower operating costs. MMDS® can cut costs and make bioethanol production greener.
