Hexagon is trying to remove the biggest friction in advanced 3D design. Cost and complexity.
The latest update to Geomagic Freeform shifts the software to a subscription model, cutting upfront costs by 66%. That changes the equation for smaller design teams and independent creators who were priced out of high-end tools until now.
But the real story is not pricing. It is usability. Freeform focuses on organic, sculptural design, something traditional CAD tools struggle with. New features like ‘Deform Selection’ make shape adjustments feel more natural, cutting down tasks that earlier took minutes into seconds. On top of that, added Python-based automation reduces repetitive workflows, especially in areas like medical device and mold design.

There is also a hardware angle. Integration with lightweight haptic devices brings a more tactile, hands-on design experience, closer to working with clay than software.
Zoom out a bit. This fits a larger shift in design tools. Less rigid engineering interfaces, more intuitive creation. And with applications across healthcare, manufacturing, and consumer products, tools like this are quietly expanding who gets to build complex 3D designs.
